Outing opportunities between now and Summer Camp

2/21/2013

Aside from the other business we discussed at the 2/20 Leaders Meeting, several ideas for trips and merit badges were discussed, as well as a possible fund raiser where all the profit went towards summer camp fees for those who participate. Here's a summary of the options presented so you can educate yourself and your Scout to determine what they would like to take part in.

Your Scout is encouraged to discuss outing ideas with his Patrol members, and present them to the Troop. They may need your help in researching their ideas for costs and logistics. Please work with them!

Plans for our March outing!

2/21/2013

All of our outings are important, and we expect every Scout to participate if at all possible. As mentioned in the Guide, attendance is required for rank advancement. This weekend is extra important because we have a new group of Webelos joining our Troop. Let's show them a good welcome!

Friday, March 1: Bridging Ceremony, Potluck, Camping at the Cabin
  • Begin arriving as early as 6pm
  • Bridging Ceremony will begin at 7pm
  • Pot Luck - Finger foods ideal since we don't have enough tables/chairs. Bring enough to feed your crew and a little more. This will be the meal for the boys and leaders that night.

Saturday, March 2: Backpack Camping at Shallow Ford Natural Area

  • We are planning to stop at Applebees in Burlington for a pancake breakfast, in support of a fundraiser that is being held there for Troop 1. Cost is $6 per person.
  • Proceed to Shallow Ford Natural Area, which is on Gerringer Mill Rd near Western Alamance High School. The campsite is PRIMITIVE (only bathroom is a porta-potty at the parking lot), and is about a mile hike so your Scout needs to pack everything needed in a backpack. We will go over what they need at Monday's meeting.
  • IMPORTANT difference here - Each Scout will be responsible for his own meals. They don't have to have their own backpacking stove, as they can share with others, but they will need to bring water and backpacking food such as freeze dried items. The Patrols may talk about this Monday and work together on some items. We will be doing more backpacking so this is a "getting started" trip to see how well they prepare.
  • PLEASE help your Scout by researching Backpacking, Trail foods, and what not to pack. We will inform them, but the more they learn the better.
  • We do have some backpacks to loan out and access to more, so let us k

Sunday, March 3: Return to Cabin

  • We are shooting for being back at the Cabin for pickup by 11am.

The 2013 Cherokee Scout Reservation Leaders Guide has been published. It's a large document, but I advise you to take the time to read through it. It's loaded with everything you wanted to know about summer camp.

You can download it here, or from our Resources page.

The Merit Badge descriptions are improved and include a difficulty level guide to help determine who should sign up for what, in order to make their experience the best possible. Some classes require additional costs and that is covered as well.

New BSA Health Forms

2/12/2013

The BSA Annual Health and Medical Record forms were updated last year. The forms we have to turn in for summer camp must have been filled out AFTER August 1, 2012. (Last year's medical forms are not valid) The new forms are located on our Resources page. Parts A, B, and C must be filled out and signed by a doctor. Part D is also required for older scouts participating in high-adventure events.

The Old North State Council is holding a

February outing recap

2/10/2013

We had a great weekend camping at the cabin. Friday night we were joined by Hunter and Joey from Pack 65, who will soon be members of the Troop's new "Buffalo" patrol. Delicious tin foil dinners were cooked and they really enjoyed some fellowship time over board games.

Saturday was a mixture of work and play for the boys, and the adult leaders had a "Beaver Day" work session around the cabin before heading to Frankie's Fun Park for the evening.

Frankie's go-cart rides were a big hit as well as the Sky Trail, Sidewinder, and arcade. A few pics are featured here.

Sunday we hiked to Scout Sunday service at the Saxapahaw Methodist Church, which was also attended by Cub Scouts from Pack 65. The service was great and an offering was taken up to be donated to Loaves and Fishes in the name of the Scouts.
